The Copthorne and Crawley Down Mapping Project consultation has now closed. Thank you to all of those that got involved in the project and shared your ideas and memories.

Sussex-based illustrator Helen Cann was commissioned by Mid Sussex District Council to create pictoral maps of Crawley Down and Copthorne using feedback received through this website and our series of public consultation events.

The pictoral maps show key local sites, natural landmarks, historic events, quotes and comments to celebrate the two villages. They will be displayed on public noticeboards in each village in the Summer/Autumn of 2023, subject to Planning approval.

What is the Copthorne and Crawley Down Mapping Project?

In celebration of the local civil parish, Worth, including the villages of Copthorne and Crawley Down, Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) has commissioned artist, Helen Cann, to produce two annotated coloured maps that will showcase the community’s favourite landmarks. A copy of the finished map will be installed in each village.

What do you think? What are your favourite spots where you live? Where have you spent your fondest memories? If you live in Copthorne or Crawley Down, or simply a frequent visitor, we want to hear from you. This could range from a historical landmark to somewhere you spent a special birthday.

In addition to receiving ideas through this page, we will be holding a series of meetings, community drop-in sessions and workshops through February to discuss ideas with the community. This will all serve as inspiration for Helen as she designs those maps.

Details

Please be aware that the drop-in sessions and mapping workshops have been rescheduled, these will now take place on Saturday 12th March 2022. You can find information below:

  • Crawley Down:
    • Community Drop-in: Saturday 12th March, 10am -12pm, The Haven Centre, Hophurst Lane, Crawley Down, West Sussex, RH10 4LJ.

You do not need to register your interest for the community drop-in sessions, but you will need to register to attend one of the workshops. For details on the hand drawn mapping workshops, run by Helen, and on how to register, please see the 'workshop registration' tab.

We would like to hear from the community about what the villages of Copthorne and Crawley Down mean to you, this includes:

  • What is your favourite memory about your area?
  • What stories can you tell us about specific places where you live?
  • What are your most visited spots? For example, which parks and outdoor spaces do you like to visit?
  • Where are your favourite buildings (pubs, sports centres, schools etc)?

You can begin to share some of these stories and personal anecdotes using the 'Copthorne landmarks' and 'Crawley Down landmarks' memory maps at the bottom of this page. Here you can add pins to the maps to mark your day to day visits and fondest stories of these areas.

All your ideas, stories and feedback collected through the engagement process will be collated and analysed into a report that will be given to the artist to inspire her work.
