Jack of all trades master of none

I grew up in Haywards Heath and the Clair Hall has been much in my 40 years of my life.

My first introduction was a venue that showed films, pantomimes and held community events and fairs.

Through my teens it was place where my college mates would compete in Battle of the Bands.

I remember latterly when there were stand up acts who were trying out their new materials. I recall Michael McIntyre, Jack Dee, Josh Widdicombe, Marcus Bridgestocke and Jeremy Hardy.

As a new family, the Clair Hall played it part by hosting NCT events (mainly new and used sales), through to providing a venue for young families celebrating their little one's birthdays.

It sadden me when the Clair Hall was closed and renamed to the Perrymount Hall. It was clear to me that the powers that be seem to have lost over time the love and understanding of what a great facility the Clair Hall provides.

It was heartening to see the Clair Hall come back into use as a Covid vaccine centre. Its name restored to once it was. The community rallied volunteers to support the NHS staff. The facility became a focal point for not just the local community but the surrounding areas. It became one of the first walk in vaccine centres and was featured on the news.

I know with some time, investment and some love that the Clair Hall in whatever form it takes can be a continued community centre catering for all needs for a growing town which is already struggling to provide enough capacity for essential services.
