Our story from Linda Grace on behalf of Haywards Heath and District u3a
Clair Hall is an important venue for members of Haywards Heath and District u3a, which has over 800 members, who are all retired or semi-retired. Our members are a diverse group in terms of their physical and mental health, aged between 60 and 96 years of age – some of whom are vulnerable to isolation, depression and loneliness.
Clair Hall has provided an opportunity for our members to get together not only to learn about a specific interest but, for some people, to combat loneliness and isolation. It has been a much used and needed facility, which we have hired on a weekly basis to accommodate various sizes of group meetings alongside our social and information meetings which attract large audiences. Its closure has led to the loss of an important amenity for our members, for whom the disruption has been upsetting.
The building has been very suitable for our members, particularly for those who have mobility difficulties. The ramp to the front doors, level access throughout the public areas and accessible toilet facilities are particularly helpful. In addition, the central location of Clair Hall means that it is easy for people to get to, with the excellent public transport available, and convenience of car parking.
