The Future of the Clair Hall Site Consultation

Welcome to the Engagement and Consultation Hub for the Future of the Clair Hall Site in Haywards Heath!

Mid-Sussex District Council is undertaking a 12-week engagement process to assist with an understanding of what the future of the site could look like.

This initial engagement programme comes at the start of the wider consultation process about what the future of the site could look like. Importantly - there has not been any decision made about its future - and there are not any preconceived ideas about what should happen.

The Council will listen to ideas, thoughts and feedback - and then report back and consult on what has been said about the building and the car park. There is a commitment to work alongside the community and to make sure that all voices are heard. For clarity, the consultation includes the entire site, which includes the car park and the Redwood Centre.

As a starting point, it would be great to know:

  • How has Clair Hall and the wider site been used in the past? - Use the Stories tab below to share your experiences.

Look under the Ideas section where you can share with us your thoughts on:

  • What sorts of uses are needed in the future?
  • Should the existing building be redeveloped or refurbished?
  • Are there any services that are lacking in Haywards Heath that we could help address through the Clair Hall site?
  • What do you like about the site and what could be improved?

The main Clair Hall building is currently being used as a COVID-19 vaccination centre and this will continue until at least next year (2022). This engagement and consultation does not impact the vaccination programme on the site - this programme is about the future after the NHS has said they no longer need to use it.

This Engagement Hub serves as a central hub where residents can provide feedback and ideas for the future of the Clair Hall site. On this page you will find:

  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section
  • Key upcoming dates
  • Registration page for events
  • Sign-up option for project updates.

We will be regularly providing updates throughout the course of the 12 weeks - so please leave your details for more information!

If you would like to contact the team about any element of the project, or send through general written feedback, please email clairhall@engagecf.co.uk or call 07542 016586. Alternatively you can write directly to us Clair Hall Project Team, C/O ECF, Metal Box Factory, 30 Great Guildford Street, London, SE1 0HS.

The engagement and consultation process is being managed by ECF, an independent specialist community engagement consultancy, who have been appointed by the Council, to ensure the widest range of voices in the community are able to provide their ideas and views on the future of the Clair Hall site. If you require assistance with this page or need an alternative visual version (braille or another language for example) please do not hesitate to get in touch. In addition, you can request a printed version of this materials about the project.

    Redwood Centre

    by Sally, 1 day ago

The Redwood Centre is a vital part of the wider Clair Hall site as it is the home of 10th Haywards Heath Scouts - it is an invaluable space for children and young people to develop and grow, particularly with its central location, access to open parkland and woodland, and large car park. Please don’t forget the Redwood Centre when considering the wider site - yes a cafe or cinema or community hub would be wonderful, but the scouts need a home too!

    Community is key

    by ClaireL65, 2 days ago
I think we can all agree that having a ‘gathering place’ for events and activities is so important to wellbeing and happiness. Personally I have been to a number of events here: comedy nights, films, live music, club and society meetings, political meetings, and most recently vaccination sessions. It is a great building in a fantastic location for public transport, with a lovely green space behind it. Clair Hall and Clair Park are fantastic and all the Hall needs is a refurb and possibly a new layout for some parts, but having a large room is important for larger events... Continue reading

    Supporting Our Young People

by paula clark, 2 days ago
My children have been at the Redwood Centre once a week for years with 10th Haywards Heath Scouts. Through this amazing program of activities they have become confident, independent young adults who now volunteer their time to support the next generation of children develop and grow. We want and need our young people to develop into the best versions of themselves. To do this we need to have community buildings where all of the fantastic activities can happen. These need to be fit for purpose and multi-use. School and church halls are not always the answer. Please make sure the... Continue reading

Haywards Heath needs an entertainment venue.

    by Barry, 2 days ago

Haywards Heath needs an entertainment venue.

The town needs a venue of this type to attract the acts to perform in the town.

We have been at Clair Hall for comedy nights, private parties, and live music. We also use the car park for Haywards Heath Cricket Club training and matches at Clair Park.

The location is great with easy access to the train station. An entertainment venue in the town is here and needed don't take it away, refurb or replace.

    Don't forget the scouts!

    by jonclark, 2 days ago

The Redwood Centre is home to the 10th Haywards Heath scouts. Both my children were members and had an incredible time. They are now young leaders and my wife is a leader, helping with the next generation. I can't say enough good things about this troop, they do so much to help local young people develop confidence, build friendships and above all, have fun.

There are now so many members that they meet over two nights. This is exactly the sort of thing that a community building should be used for, please bear them in mind when deciding the future... Continue reading

The Peanut Butter Falcon - Charity Film Screening

by stephen clarke, 2 days ago

In Feb 2020 . thankfully just before we were all disrupted by the pandemic we used Clair Hall to host and screen a charity event screening of the wonderful Peanut Butter Falcon movie....

The event was held on a awful day weatherwise as Storm Ciara was battering the UK and yet 300+ people came out and enjoy a fantastic film which was hosted by our son Ross...

This wouldn't have been possible without the Clair Hall facility and the team believing that despite the fact that they hadn't put on a film show for years that people would come...

    Saturday parkrun

by Pete Francis, 3 days ago

As one of the organisers of the local parkrun which takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in Clair Park, we have been fortunate since our first event in 2013 to have the use of Clair Hall facilities, including toilets and car parking. Each Saturday, we have between 150 – 200 people attend our 5k parkrun event. The provision of toilets is a major boost to the true inclusiveness of the event, enabling attendance by those who might not otherwise attend.

We were permitted to restart holding parkrun at Clair Park in July although without the use of toilets for... Continue reading

    Life long resident

    by Jobes.m2018, 3 days ago
I am a life long resident of Haywards Heath, and lived in Queen's Road as a child. I used Clair Meadow as my playground, and remember it before Clair Hall was built very well.

Over the years I have used Clair Hall for so many different uses : dance shows, amateur dramatic productions, art exhibitions, yoga classes, private functions, blood donations, comedy nights, cinema and so many more.

It would be a travesty if a growing town the size of Haywards Heath was left without a community space where people can meet and socialise. What is required is a flexible... Continue reading

HH Cricket Club lives here too!

by Gary Honeysett, 7 days ago

Since 1897, cricket has been played in Clair Park and now the town has a Club with nearly 350 members using the ground on a regular basis through the spring and summer. With that, Clair Hall car park is a vital space for our members and visitors and on any single Friday night, we can cater for over 100 Juniors. The Club is providing sport for all ages & abilities and growing each year and striving to make it the heart of the town. Without adequate parking, it will be very difficult for us to continue to provide sport for... Continue reading
