Mid Sussex District Council is undertaking a programme of work to review the provision and management of a number of small, recently adopted residential play parks in Burgess Hill.
The three sites are located close to one another and were originally installed in the 1990s as part of nearby housing developments. In recent years, they have been transferred to Mid Sussex District Council to maintain. By the time they came into Council ownership, some of the equipment and surfaces had already begun to deteriorate.
These are places where children play, families spend time together, neighbours meet and communities enjoy the outdoors. We want to make sure they remain safe, welcoming and maintained to the standard residents rightly expect.
Reviewing these sites together helps us make the best use of the funding available while ensuring residents continue to have access to nearby play opportunities and valuable green spaces. The funding available for these parks, which was provided by the original developer as part of the transfer to the Council, is not sufficient to replace play equipment at all three locations. While no green space is being lost, some sites will need to change to ensure they remain safe, well-maintained and valuable for the local community.

Temple Grove
This park will be the focus for new investment. A new piece of play equipment will be installed to replace the item that has already been removed. The other existing play equipment will remain and be maintained. You are invited to vote for your favourite option from four different multi-play units via an easy consultation survey. Each option offers different play experiences and is designed for different age groups. We want families, children and neighbours who use the park to help choose the equipment they would most like to see installed.Primrose Close
At this park, the existing play equipment will remain in place and be maintained. Improvements at this site will focus on making the park easier to access and move around, with new paths being installed to better link the basketball court and play facilities. These works are due to begin in mid-July.Chaffinch Close
The play equipment at this park was removed because it was unsafe. The remaining safety surfacing will be removed in mid to late July and the area will be seeded with grass. We understand that some residents may be disappointed that new play equipment is not planned for this site. However, Chaffinch Close will remain a public open space, and the basketball hoop and tarmac court will stay. Residents will continue to have access to play facilities nearby at Temple Grove and Primrose Close, including the new play equipment planned for Temple Grove.
We are now asking residents what is most important to you about the future of Chaffinch Close. Through our consultation survey, you can tell us what you would most like this space to provide for the community. Your feedback and ideas will help inform future plans for the site.
Have your say:
You can now:
- Vote for your preferred option of new play equipment to be installed at Temple Grove
- Tell us what is most important to you about the future of Chaffinch Close
The two consultations are open online through the Council’s Engagement Hub webpage and will close 20 August 2026.
- Council officers will also hold an informal drop-in session at Chaffinch Close on Wednesday 29 July between 12-3pm. Please come along if you would like to ask questions or share your feedback and ideas directly with the project team.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to get involved. By sharing your views, you can help shape safer and more welcoming spaces for local families and the wider community.

A small fenced area on Saxby Road in the northwest suburbs of Burgess Hill, we are considering the best outcome for this space.
We will talk to local residents in due course to understand how this space might best be used.
In the meantime we will be removing the old surfacing and reinstating grass so the space can be opened up for use.
The basketball hoop will remain unaffected and available for use.
TEMPLE GROVE PLAY AREA
While we will review the best use of the existing space, it will include new play equipment.
We will seek public view on new play equipment designs in due course, and resident feedback will inform the final choice.
PRIMROSE CLOSE PLAY AREA
We are planning to improve access to the existing facilities here, as part of our wider planning of the three parks in this area.
We plan to commence this work over this summer.
